Early Life
EARLY LIFE AND BEGINNINGS
Alex grew up in Carrigaline, Co. Cork.
As a child, he was not the standout athlete. In his own journey, he was not naturally the fastest, and while others collected medals, he often found himself behind them. His sister was the athlete in the family, but Alex discovered something else early on — a pull toward endurance.
By the age of 15, he had developed a strong interest in long-distance running. He wanted to run a marathon, but because of age restrictions at the time, he could not.
Disappointed, Alex stepped away from running for a number of years. But the interest in endurance never left - it was only paused.
Navy Life
NAVY YEARS
Alex joined the Navy in 1994.
Thousands applied, and around 80 were selected.
Looking back, he describes this as his first real challenge. He broke the process into clear steps — fitness, interview, and preparation — including completing a navigation course.
This period introduced him to discipline, structure, teamwork, and an environment where he thrived.
Many of these values remain at the core of who he is today.

The Incident
THE ACCIDENT, TRAUMA, AND RECOVERY
At one point, Alex’s life changed dramatically following a severe accident.
His injuries included:
-
A shattered wrist
-
Multiple forearm fractures
-
A broken ankle
-
A fractured kneecap
Recovery was not straightforward. It involved pain, setbacks, and the mental challenge of rebuilding after trauma, including managing PTSD.
Rather than stepping back, Alex approached recovery the same way he would later approach endurance — one step at a time.
This period became one of the defining chapters of his life.
From hospital bed to elite athlete — his journey is built on persistence, not shortcuts.
The Comeback
RETURN TO RUNNING AND FIRE SERVICE
After a year of rehabilitation — rebuilding physically and mentally — Alex returned stronger.
He joined Cork City Fire Brigade, entering a disciplined and demanding environment.
Around this time, he was introduced to St Finbarr’s Athletic Club. What began as a hobby quickly became something more.
Surrounded by experienced coaches and athletes, Alex progressed rapidly — naturally drawn toward longer endurance events.
Service and endurance became the two lanes of the same life.

We imagine a world where every child can learn in a language they understand. A world where language is not a barrier but a bridge to opportunity. Our vision is to see every learner equipped with the tools to succeed, regardless of where they come from or what language they speak at home.
We believe in a future where literacy is global, learning is joyful, and no child is left behind because of the language they speak.
One child at a time. One word at a time.
