Training Journey
The Road to 2027 Starts Now

Every world record attempt is built long before race day.

For Alex O’Shea, the 2027 Cork City Marathon challenge is not just about turning up on the start line. It is about months of preparation, physical conditioning, equipment testing, pacing work, endurance build-up, and learning how to perform under extreme conditions.

This page follows the journey toward the 2027 Guinness World Record attempt — step by step.

WHAT THIS JOURNEY IS LEADING TO

In 2027, to mark 150 years of Cork City Fire Brigade, Alex O’Shea will attempt a new Guinness World Record at the Cork City Marathon.

He will run the full 26.2 miles in:

  • Full firefighter gear

  • Breathing apparatus

All in support of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

This is not a standard marathon build-up.

It is preparation for an endurance challenge that combines:

  • Distance

  • Heat

  • Weight

  • Restricted breathing

  • Operational-style pressure

  • Repeated stop-start disruption through cylinder changes

That is why the training journey matters.

THE PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING JOURNEY PAGE

This page is the living build-up to the attempt.

It is where supporters, sponsors, media, and the wider community can follow:

  • Preparation updates

  • Gear testing

  • Endurance build-up

  • Behind-the-scenes content

This is where the journey becomes visible.

WHAT TRAINING INVOLVES

Preparing for this challenge means more than running miles.

The build-up includes:

  • Marathon conditioning

  • Heat adaptation

  • Fire kit familiarisation

  • Breathing apparatus testing

  • Cylinder change planning

  • Pace management

  • Stop-start rhythm work

  • Mental resilience training

  • Recovery and durability work

Because this challenge is not just about speed. It is about learning how to sustain performance while carrying equipment, managing discomfort, and protecting rhythm under pressure.

GEAR TESTING

A major part of the journey is testing the equipment that will define the challenge.

This includes:

  • Fire kit

  • Boots

  • Pants

  • Jacket

  • Helmet

  • Breathing apparatus

  • 300-bar cylinder

  • Rigid backplate harness

  • Full face mask

Each element changes the physical demand of the run.

Training must account for:

  • Added weight

  • Restricted airflow

  • Heat buildup

  • Comfort limitations

  • Equipment handling under fatigue

This page will document how that testing develops over time.

ENDURANCE BUILD-UP

The marathon itself is 26.2 miles.

But the build-up to a challenge like this is much bigger than one distance.

Alex’s training journey is about gradually building the capacity to handle:

  • Long-distance workload

  • Repeated effort under strain

  • Sustained pacing

  • Operational discomfort

  • Recovery between sessions

  • Physical stress over time

This section tracks the progression toward race readiness.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The client direction for this page also included a behind-the-scenes element.

This space is for documenting:

  • Training sessions

  • Preparation milestones

  • Equipment trials

  • Marathon build-up

  • Real-time campaign moments

  • Day-to-day progress toward 2027

It gives people a closer view of the discipline behind the attempt.

Not just the big public announcement — but the work underneath it.

CYLINDER CHANGE PREPARATION

One of the defining realities of the 2027 attempt is the need for approximately 13 cylinder changes during the marathon.

That means training must prepare for:

  • Stopping

  • Changing cylinders

  • Restarting efficiently

  • Recovering momentum

  • Returning to pace without panic

The official time does not stop. So this part of the journey is not optional. It is one of the most important technical parts of the entire challenge.

The Road to 2027

Every step of the journey is built on preparation, purpose, and progress. From training sessions to key milestones, this is where the work behind the world record attempt comes to life.

WHY THE JOURNEY MATTERS

Training is where the challenge becomes real.

This page shows that the 2027 world record attempt is not built on hype.

It is built on:

  • Preparation

  • Repetition

  • Testing

  • Endurance

  • Discipline

  • Problem-solving

  • Commitment

It reflects Alex O’Shea’s long-held belief:

“Preparation breeds success.”

CONNECTION TO CHARITY

Every part of this journey connects back to the bigger mission.

The 2027 attempt is being undertaken to raise funds for:

Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

So the training journey is not only about performance. It is also about purpose. Every update, every session, every test, and every milestone brings the campaign closer to creating real charitable impact.
